THE DEVELOPMENT Gifted and Elementals first display signs of possessing abilities during puberty (between the ages of eight and fourteen), though there have been instances of abilities developing quicker (as young as five) or slow (as old as eighteen). note: any abilities developing withing the character within an age earlier then 12 years old must be cleared with the admin. Users do not have instant control of their abilities and, similar to muscles, they have limits that can be pushed with practice. Many scientists have come up with stages to determine where a mutant is in his or her development of their abilities. However, there are instances when a mutant seems to be able to use their abilities based on instinct or as a reflex. Obviously, these instances occur when the individual is under a lot of stress, such as when they feel threatened, or someone they are bonded with is threatened, or if they are in a lot of pain, become extremely emotional, etc. Scientists have not been able to do much research on this matter, but they are operating under the theory that a release of adrenalin "activates" the abilities of the individual. This seems to occur no matter what stage the individual's ability is at. THE STAGES SHORT VERSION STAGE ONE: Character has little to no control over the ability with many limits/restrictions. STAGE TWO: Character has some control over the ability and has pushed the limits of his/her ability. STAGE THREE: Character has complete control over the ability and has fewer limits. STAGE FOUR: Character develops a new understanding of their abilities and grows, developing sub-abilities. STAGE ONE This is the first stage of development. During stage one of development, sometimes the gifted has little to no control of starting, stopping, or manipulating their abilities. Also, during stage one, the individual may be encountered with many limits to his or her ability. EXAMPLE: A telekinetic who moves items may not be able to will an item to move when he/she thinks about it, but sometimes items move of their own accord when he/she is under stress. Also, the telekinetic may only be able to move items a short distance, or only move items that are under a certain weight or size. STAGE TWO This is an "in between" stage. At stage two the individual has gained more control and/or has been able to overcome some limits. Sometimes gifted may have more control, but still be very limited. Other times gifted may have few limits, but still lack control. Typically they are about even, though. EXAMPLE: The telekinetic is able to move items at will, though perhaps not very well. Sometimes he/she can stop items from moving when he/she is stressed. The telekinetic may also be able to move items further and move items that are heavier or larger, but they are still limited as to what they can move. STAGE THREE This is considered the final stage in developing an ability. At stage three mutants have nearly perfect control of their abilities. They also have very few limits. Sometimes they still slip up, of course, but it does happen. To be at stage three, the individual must have overcome most of their limits and have control of the ability. If he/she lacks in either area, he/she is still at stage two. EXAMPLE: A telekinetic is able to move objects when he or she wishes, not just when he or she is stressed. The individual may be able to move just about anything over almost any distance, no matter the weight or size, though the extremely large/heavy objects or far distances may strain him or her. STAGE FOUR There is actually a stage beyond the third stage, which almost any gifted can reach with enough practice. After obtaining complete control of and overcoming most of the limits of the original ability, a mutant can sometimes develop "sub-abilities". Since they are "branches" of the first ability, learning to control them is far easier and may take only a matter of weeks (where as stages may take somewhere between months to years). These sub-abilities are always connected to the original ability in some way. And, these sub-abilities cannot have their own sub-abilities. (In other words, if the ability seems to be connected to a sub-ability, but not the original, then it's off-limits.) EXAMPLES: A telepath learns to enter someone's dreams. A pyrokinetic learns how to control heat. Example of a sub-ability of a sub-ability: A morpher (someone who can look like another person) learns how to shapeshift into animals. Then he/she learns animal mimicry (animal instincts, reflexes, sight, smell, etc.) This wouldn't work because animal mimicry would be a sub-ability of animal shapeshifting. But in this case, animal shapeshifting is already a sub-ability of human morphing. Make sense? (If you have questions, or if you're not sure as to which stage your character is, feel free to contact a staff member. We're happy to help!) THE ELEMENTS All abilities of a gifted is based off of a basic element and each element has a supporting element that almost always accompanies it if the gifted has more than one elemental gene. EARTH: Earth is the most passive and strong element, although it can be destructive if one experiences its wrath. It is seen as the force within us where we build ourselves upon, the invulnerable force within us we can turn to in great misery. Earth is more than the ground we stand on, the brown dirt we know with this name, it is stone as well in all it varieties, including the most precious gems. It appears also in the form of wood and every object we shape. Spiritual Earth is in some way very much like physical Earth. It is the base on which people build their personality, which keeps your mind together and lets you focus and helps to determine. EXAMPLES: Any ability that uses Raw Physical Power, Earth or Plants in any way, shape or form is an Earth ability. Super Strength, Terrakinesis etc. AIR: Invisible, unpredictable, unreliable, playful, soothing, destructive, inspiring and life giving: The Element of Air or Wind is all these things and much more. It is the representation of all that we cannot see: our souls, our spirits, our minds, and our hearts - of that what lies beneath or beyond as some scholars say. Purity of the spirit and the heart, clarity of thought within the mind, focus of intent, unhindered sight, are all under the control of the clear soaring unfettered Element of Air. Invisible, Air can not be seen, but its influence can be clearly felt. Air in motion is Wind, moving things across the land unseen but felt. One cannot see the Wind, nor hold it in their hands, Wind cannot be captured, and Wind cannot be tamed. Instead what we can see is the ripple upon the waters, the fallen leaves dancing in a circle, dust swirling across the path, or see it invisible as it plays with a young girl's hair. Air can also be motionless and when Wind is absent Air can no longer be as much as felt as detected. We breathe Air even if it does not move as Wind, and it surrounds us even still as an invisible force upon our lives. EXAMPLE: Any ability that has to do with Air, Sound or Spirit/Mind in any way, shape or form is an Air ability. Telepathy, Astral Projection, Levitation, Flight etc. FIRE: Fire in its physical appearance can do for you what the sun itself does for the whole world - it provides you with light and warmth and can serve you as heat source to cook upon. Fire is also an impulsive and a dangerous element, that can smoulder and suddenly burst. Fire can give wings of courage, compassion and devotion. Fire is obstinate and heady and absolutely not subtle. It is seen as the force burning inside us, giving us an iron willpower to go for our goals, bestowing upon us the passion to do it with all of ourselves, resulting in the honour and freedom to do it without backstabbing and with an open face. Fire is in physical form, just as in spiritual form, a dangerous thing. EXAMPLE: Any ability that has to do with Heat, Fire Light or Technology in any way, shape or form is a Fire ability. Pyrokinesis, Photokinesis. Microwave Emissions, etc. WATER: Water is often associated with emotions, art, time and especially healing and philosophy. It has the depth of a philosophers soul and is the inspiration of the artist, but that makes them just depending on its unpredictable nature. Water gives much, but takes as easy everything back. Water stands, like Fire, for deep, but also for variable, or - expressed in a positive way - "open" emotions, for the acceptance of diversity and the will for the new. Water also represents the contemplative moment, the searching in your inner self, for the discovering of the deepest and darkest things of yourself but also for unleashed chaos, for uncertainty without a goal. EXAMPLE: Any ability that has to do with Liquid, Gas, Ice, Emotions, Healing, or Time in any way, shape or form is a Water ability. Hydrokinesis, Time Manipulation, Empathy etc. |
