The black haired woman had gotten a card in the mail last night from her mother for Christmas, late Christmas present, and it was a hundred dollars to spend it on her “comic book obsession.” She never knew what kind of comic books Melanie already had or didn’t approve of, so instead she just sent her enough money once a year to buy herself a few of them. Holding the glass in her hand, Melanie watched it start to frost over and she held the phone to her ear while stirring the glass, the liquid inside starting to cool and form into a slushy mix rather quickly. Melanie didn’t really like drinking too many hot things, especially her drinks, which was why she was freezing her coffee for that morning. “Well you go spend that money, dear, and make sure you call me later, alright?” She agreed and hung up, wiping the frost off the outside of her glass while making her way back to her bedroom.
Humming to herself, Melanie danced around her room while getting dressed, pulling on some of her nerdiest clothing in her closet; Batman t-shirt, Batman sweatshirt, and a cute pair of Batman studs she had bought the day before. The only nerd thing she was wearing that wasn’t a Batman thing was a pair of knee high Pikachu socks. She had heard word of a comic book store that was a lot different than the one she normally went to in the mall, meaning that it was actually filled with decent comic books and probably wasn’t going to cost her an arm and a leg to buy the ones that she needed. Melanie walked over to a bookshelf with glass doors and pulled them open, bending down to pull out a set of comics; they were the Green Lantern and so far, she only had the first seven, now she just needed the rest of them. “Well then, off I go,” she said with a smile, pulling her hair up into a pony tail as she walked out the door. If it the place hadn’t been downtown then Melanie probably would have walked, but instead she was slipping into her yellow Volkswagen bug.
Pop music rolled out of her speakers while she sat around in traffic, tapping her hands against the wheel and bobbing her head a bit. After only a couple years of living in L.A, Melanie managed to find a way to get use to traffic, though it probably helped that she had more patience than most people, which was evident in the way that everyone around her was honking their horns and yelling at people. She rolled her eyes at their stupidity and simply turned up her radio in a weak attempt to drown them all out, but it really wasn’t much good. She finally turned down a side street and found the place. Melanie was rather giddy over this and she stepped into the store, looking around the place for a long moment before sliding her way over to the shelves and looking through them.
She wasn’t even looking for the comic books that she wanted, much too interested in having a major nerdgasm over everything that she was looking at. There were comic books here that she hadn’t ever been able to find anywhere else and she was pleasantly pleased. Or maybe extremely excited. Or something along those lines. So excited that she didn’t even realize anyone else was even standing behind her. TAGGED joey! WORDS 6-6-6 OUTFIT na na na na BATMAN NOTES stare at the wordcount...staaaare aaaat iiiiiit [/style]

There would be absolutely no point in denying that Joey was a complete and utter nerd. No she wasn’t the book kind of nerd that spent hours on end studying. Joey was the kind of nerd that spent all night playing videogames or days having a Star Wars marathon or spending more money on TVs and videogame consoles than food. Even if she wanted to live down the fact that she was a nerd she couldn’t because almost all of her tattoos were either game, movie, or comic related. Besides there was nothing to be ashamed of, it just is how Joey is. She probably wouldn’t be the same person if she hadn’t grown up almost friendless and not giving a damn about makeup.
The thing about growing up and being known as a dork or a nerd it didn’t come with a lot of friends. Sure she had two people to sit with at lunch who were more concerned about the difference between an A+ and A-, but she didn’t have friends to call up on the weekend to go see a movie or someone to spend the night or to even go to a party with. When Joey moved to LA though she was determined to make at some friends and she did. She didn’t make dozens of friends, but a few that would go out on the weekend with her or just hang out. Since she only had a few is why it was so surprising that when she was walking into the comic book store she almost ran into Mel’s back.
Joey didn’t find it surprising that Mel as at the comic store because Mel was like Joey’s nerd twin. They’d have nerd-a-thons, play video games, go to the comic book store, go to midnight premieres of super hero movies, and all that jazz. Honestly when Joey first met Mel she didn’t think that someone that looked like they could fit in with all the pretty snobby girls in Joey’s high school could actually be interested in half the thing’s Joey was. Wait no, make that like a fourth because Joey spent half of her time being Miss Nerdiverse and the other half making money tracking down people and getting information out of them.
If there was one thing that Joey hadn’t told Mel about it was the fact that she could fit into the world of super heroes that they read about in comics easily because she did in fact have super powers. Actually nobody even knew that Joey had powers, even the people that she worked for. The people that hired her just thought she was some normal human with a knack for finding out things that she shouldn’t. Honestly Joey wasn’t too sure if the Advocates or Saints even knew that she had a gift. For all she knew they could just want her because she can find information well, not because they know she has any sort of special abilities.
Whatever, super powers or not Joey had actually made friends in LA and she had just run into one who apparently had no idea that she was blocking the way into the comic book store. Joey didn’t collect too many comic books, but she did enjoy some Wonder Woman, but the classic Marvel heroes were always he favorite. She didn’t try and collect every comic book there ever was, but hey there was nothing wrong with having a shelf on the bookshelf that contained most of her videogames dedicated to comic books.
Joey waited a few more second for Mel to step out of the way, its not like she was in much of a hurry because she didn’t have classes for the rest of the day and she didn’t have any huge offers for a job yet. However Joey wasn’t the patient kind of person, so waiting wasn’t going to last too long for her. Beep beep Mel, you’re in the way Joey said with a joking smile on her face. [/style][/style]

Like her smile could grow even more? She was lucky that she wasn’t grinning like a fool. One of the comic books found its way into her hands and she slowly started to flip through the pages, aware that she had grabbed one from the middle of the series, but it wasn’t like she was actually going to read the comic book, she just wanted to see the images for the moment; one could tell a lot about a comic book by the images that were drawn inside. Comic books were more than just normal, pictureless books; there wasn’t a block of text that started to swim before your eyes if you stared too long. She had always thought of comic books as movies on paper; there was action and you could actually see what you were reading…and there really wasn’t any room for misinterpretation.
Yes, Melanie was seriously standing there and going over a list about how comic books were so much better than books.
She put the comic book back in its place and started to reach for another one when she heard a voice behind her, “beep, beep Mel, you’re in the way.” It took her a second to actually recognize the voice, mostly because she had been so absorbed in what she was looking at that the black haired woman had been momentarily lost to the world. However, as her heart started to settle and the pain in her tongue from clipping it with her teeth began to ebb away, the small smile returned to her face as she turned around to face Joey. There was a slightly embarrassed look on her face and Melanie chuckled as she rubbed the back of her neck, “whoops, I didn’t really think about the doorway when I got distracted.” Yes, she had the tendency to be ditzy and easily distracted like that, but in her defense, she was in nerd heaven right now and could easily spend hours…or even all day…in this store.
Melanie took another quick look around before her eyes fell back on Joey, stepping off to the side a bit, “so…do you come to this store often? Because I just heard about it the other day,” she admitted. She felt sorry for herself, really, because when compared to this place the store in the mall didn’t even have a chance. “They even have Superhero stuff,” she said, her eyes landing on a couple of Batman items that she didn’t have…because Melanie needed more Batman gear. But what was she doing?! She was letting herself get distracted again and the black haired woman bumped Joey with her hip light, “so what have you been up to lately anyway?” The two of them could have easily been considered nerd sisters, in fact she was pretty sure she had never met anyone before Joey who could even meet her level of nerdiness. But that’s what happened when you lived in a small city in Montana. [/style]

The appeal of comic books really started in high school for Joey. She wasn’t exactly considered the coolest person in the world and she didn’t really have any friends. At first she figured since she basically fit the mold of an average dorky nerd she might as well make it even more perfect and made a trip to the comic book store just for the hell of it. When she went she wasn’t expecting to actually enjoy comic books. They helped her get lost in a world that wasn’t centered around her lacking social life or the fact that she had some weird super power. That was another thing she was also kind of hoping that they comic books would give her some answers.
Apparently Joey wasn’t the only one who got lost in the world of comics because Mel was so absorbed in them that she didn’t even notice she was blocking Joey’s way. Seeing as Joey has known Mel for almost two years now it really was no surprise that she was spacing out. There was one incident about a year ago involving a cake, a pillow, and a very spacey Mel. Yeah after that Joey just learned to accept the fact that her friend just wasn’t always paying the most attention to the world around her at times.
Its completely understandable Joey said knowing from first hand experience that it was easy to get lost in nerd heaven in this comic book store. The comic books back home in Kansas were sold out of a closet in the regular, rather small bookstore in town. If she even wanted to get a decent comic she would have to drive an hour or two. When she got to LA the comic book store in the mall Joey basically died because it was an actual store that was close to her apartment. Then when she found this place it was like she had died and gone to nerd heaven, so if this was Mel’s first time there then Joey completely understood.
I can’t believe you just heard about it! Joey said truthfully shocked. If there were any other girl that Joey has ever met that is even at the same level of nerdy as Joey is that girl would be Mel. I found it a few months ago and its been my new favorite store since Joey told her as she walked out of the doorway and into the store with Mel. Oh yeah that’s where I got my Wonder Woman shirt! Joey said when Mel pointed out the super hero stuff that Joey nearly fainted over when she first found the store.
Oh you know the usual Joey said as she started to flip through the comics, basically looking for anything Wonder Woman, her favorite. I’ve been really busy with school and work Joey said which was very true. She had been taking more jobs as JJ lately and with more jobs left less time to do schoolwork. When she first started with school Joey had been doing pretty good, but since then her grades have slowly dropped. Now she was starting to wonder if she could stay in school and keep working as JJ. Sometimes she even wonders if it would be best to actually drop out and work full time.
What about you? What have you been doing? Joey said as she picked up a Wonder Woman comic that she didn’t have. [/style][/style]

Sure, she could afford a shirt or two, maybe a couple nerdy accessories, and then of course the comic books she had been looking at. Of course, if she wanted to eat in the next couple of weeks she’d pick one or two things, not ten…nah, Melanie didn’t need to eat! “It’s completely understandable.” Melanie chuckled lightly as Joey spoke, just imagining how every other nerd felt their first time walking into this store. It almost felt like she was getting her nerd cherry popped all over again (and yes folks, she did like to refer to it as her nerd cherry, ever since the very first time that she had read a comic book).
“I can’t believe you just heard about it!” Melanie rubbed the back of her neck and gave a slightly embarrassed grin, “honestly, I can’t either. I would have thought it would have been on my radar, especially since I walk down here often enough.” Sure, she would have liked to think that it was possible that it was new enough that she had just barely missed it, but from what she had heard it had been here for a while. “I found it a couple months ago and it’s been my new favorite store since.” And there was more proof that she couldn’t use the “new” excuse; Joey had been coming in for a few months now! “Well there’s no doubt that I’m completely in love with this place. If I could marry a building then let me tell you, I’d do it right now.” She kept a straight face for only a few seconds and then bust up laughing, covering her mouth with her hands a bit; so it was a bit of an exaggeration.
She was playing with the sleeve of a Green Lantern t-shirt as Joey mentioned having bought her Wonder Woman shirt here, and Melanie dug through them, finding the exact shirt that she had bought. “Oh hey, look what I found,” she said with a light grin before letting the shirt fall back into place. Wonder Woman wasn’t her favorite of the superheroes, but she had to admit the woman had her moments…and of course she knew what to buy Joey when it came to presents. “I give up, I’m buying it,” she said suddenly, grabbing the Green Lantern shirt she had been staring at for a few minutes, and then Melanie was back to looking at the comics she had been thinking of buying. “Oh you know the usual. I’ve been really busy with school and work.”
“Oh, there’s one thing I don’t really miss, school,” Melanie said with a light shake of her head. Although she had actually been contemplating going back and getting her business degree, but that was something that was still up in the air as far as she was concerned. “What about you? What have you been doing?” Melanie let out a rather bored sounding lip flutter, “oh…working mostly. I haven’t had too many days or nights off lately.” Most of her time was spent at the café where she worked, but the model thing she was doing was starting to slow down quite a bit, which sucked because damn she got a lot of money for some of those photoshoots.

Truth be told comic books were probably the one thing that the monster called Joey’s nerdy obsessions hasn’t been able to gobble up. Comic books were interesting to Joey, but she wasn’t obsessed with them like she was with videogames. Some people didn’t believe her when they first met that a girl could have such a nerdy and kind of guy-ish obsession. However when they walk into her apartment it’s a bit easier to believe the story about her that during spring break two years ago she spent the entire time playing video games, only moving to take care of human necessities.
Really the only reason that Joey had even been to Mad Ox was for the videogames, the comics were just for browsing or social interaction. Of course Mel would love this place though. Anyone with a nerdy bone in their body would love this place. Though she did doubt that anybody shared Mel’s desire to marry a building, but then again Joey wasn’t too sure she had met anybody like Mel before. For a second Joey contemplated Mel’s building fetish then laughed along with Mel at the thought of going to a wedding and having Mel make out with a building. Well I’m sure you two will have beautiful babies Joey said sarcastically. Even though Mel was pretty, hell the girl was a model, but Joey couldn’t shake the image of a baby made out of bricks looking like it got hit by a car.
When Mel held up a Wonder Woman comic Joey looked at it closely but she had already had it. She was just about to tell her to buy it because it was actually one of the better ones, but Mel made up her mind before Joey could even say anything. Well you can buy that and I’m going to buy that Joey said pointing across the store at the display of the latest and newest videogame that had come out. It wasn’t one of the games that Joey was obsessed over, if it was she would already have gotten it midnight the day it was released, but this was one of those ones that could wait a bit.
How about we don’t think about school or work Joey said with a grimace. Lately Joey had been wandering she should be able to keep up going to school and doing her job. Hell she made enough money working and if she didn’t have to pay for school then she would be able to actually save some money up. However she needed a cover. It would be suspicious for someone so young with her family background to be living in LA in an apartment like hers without a documented job. Anybody with a brain cell and Google could figure that out.
With a small shake of her head Joey pushed those thoughts out of her head and walked over to grab the videogame off the shelf. When she got back to Mel she said. How about we go back to my place, break in this game, maybe watch some movies, and note think about school or work or anything? Joey offered waving the videogame in front of Mel’s face like a hypnotist. Honestly Joey could use a good nerd-a-thon right now. [/style][/style]

Whenever she had thoughts like that they were always cartoony, which only served to make them funnier, and let’s face it, that would have been fucked up to see. She had to bite on the inside of her lip to stop herself from laughing even harder at the thought, choking back the snort that threatened to escape all at the same time. The very unladylike snort that only seemed to come out when Joey decided to make comments like that. Melanie covered her mouth for a moment and then dropped her hand, clearing her throat, “I think that would prove to be a tad more painful than normal childbirth. I think I may pass on the marriage bit after all.”
Throwing the shirt over her shoulder, Melanie picked up a couple of the comic books and thumbed through them quickly before giving a brief nod, having officially decided that she was going to buy them, turning around as Joey spoke again and went straight for the video games. Melanie was new on the video game thing; sure she had played a bit of Mario and Legend of Zelda, but game stations hadn’t been allowed in her house when she was growing up. Comic books had been her only means of escape, but over the past year or so she had been getting a little more them…a little bit. Enough so, in the very least, that she didn’t mind the occasional video game marathon on nerd nights. She leaned over Joey’s shoulder a bit to see what game it was, “what’s that one about?”
“How about we don’t think about school or work?” Melanie laughed and nodded, eyes wandering over the bit of other merchandise near where they were standing, “I think I can totally live with that. They’re not the best conversation topics anyway.” Melanie started forward toward the counter with her stuff as Joey snagged the video game, “how about we go back to my place, break in this game, maybe watch some movies, and not think about school or work or anything?” A light smile broke over her face at the thought and she agreed readily, “now that is a wonderful idea. Oh, and I can make food…nachos, cupcakes…other random shit that we feel like eating.” For a woman who was a model she ate like a three hundred pound fat kid in a cheesecake factory that was giving out free samples.
She put her stuff down on the counter and smiled at the kid standing behind it, pulling out her wallet at the same time and setting down her debit card to pay for her items, wincing a little bit at the price…god damn comic books were way too fucking expensive, but she loved them anyway. Stepping off to the side, Melanie chewed off a string of nail that had chipped slightly while waiting for Joey to get the items. Her mostly boring day was turning out to be better already.
